Midrand Camera Club - April 2013 Newsletter

MIDRAND CAMERA CLUB

NEWSLETTER APRIL 2013

I do hope you all had a blessed and joyous Easter and that the Easter bunny was really good to you.

The programme sent out recently for the remainder of the year now gives you all the set subjects with their definitions but Nico will include the definitions in photovault for the set subjects.  Have fun, challenge yourself completely and show us all these fantastic images so that we can all enjoy them.

Photovault is now open for your entries this month, please get them in ASAP.  We are still on 1024 x 768 so no changes there.   Also  you must put in your star rating in your profile in Photovault and then save it.   If your star rating changes when you are promoted etc., then you go in again and change it and save it.   It is most important to save any changes you make to your profile.   This is where there have been some discrepancies with the star ratings and star ratings of 9 etc., have come up when the images are downloaded, you must always save when you make any changes, especially to your profile.

THE MAY MEETING HAS HAD TO BE MOVED TO THE 22ND MAY DUE TO UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSTANCES – WE DO APOLOGISE FOR THIS.   SO IN MAY IT IS THE 4TH WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH AND NOT THE 3RD.   THIS IS ONLY FOR MAY.   PSSA WEB SITE HAS BEEN CHANGED ACCORDINGLY FOR MAY ONLY.

Those of us going to the outing at the Rhino Park the week end of the 20/21st April are all looking forward to it very much.  It will be nice to have fun, socialise and enjoy some photography.   Please contact Ken if you have any further enquiries.

Looking forward to seeing you all again on the 17 April.  Please contact me if you still have some queries.

MCC Programme for the remainder of 2013

Here is the programme and the set subjects for the remainder of the 2013 year.

April 2013

The meeting is scheduled for 17 April 2013 and Francois Roux, Hon. FPSSA, FPSSA, AFIAP will do a presentation on Natural Light.

The set subject for the evening is "Backlighting with no flash".

Backlighting refers to lighting in a photograph that comes from behind a subject. Because backlighting requires a subtle manipulation of a scene's light, photographers consider it a more advanced technique to master.
When effectively implemented in a scene, backligting can enhance the finer details of an object (such as the tiny hairs on bugs) or scenes more delicate features (such as dust particles or drops of mist in a given background).
Having a scene lit from behind can serve to bring out the shape and form of subjects in a beautiful way. If too much light does enter the lens when a photographer is trying to use backlighting, the image will lose definition.
The use of backlighting can either enhance or diminish the definition and intricacy of a photo, whether or not it is used correctly.
For this month the light source has to be natural light in other words the sun.

May 2013

The meeting is scheduled for 22 May 2013 and Johan Hosten, APSSA will do a presentation on Creative Landscapes.

The set subject for the evening is "Creative Landscapes".

Creative Landscapes should be an artistic expression of a landscape in a more artistic (an unusual or non-conformist) way. In other words, not the everyday straight forward shot of a landscape. The idea is to find an unusual angle, unusual light conditions, highly expressive enhancements with the art elements and principles, i.e. colour, line texture, pattern, shapes etc. A definition is just the factor that inhibits free artistic expression. Manipulation is allowed.

June 2013

The meeting is scheduled for 19 June 2013 and Jack Weinberg, Hon. EPSSA, EPSSA, FPSSA will do a presentation on Bird Photography.

The set subject for the evening is "Birds".

Images must be of birds only (birds must be the main subject, such that a well informed person could testify to its true representation. Still life studies, mounted specimens, museum exhibits are NOT allowed. Only images that do not alter the truth of the photographic statement will be eligible in this category. In terms of the PSSA definitions, digital manipulation is not allowed in this set subject.

July 2013

The meeting is scheduled for 17 July 2013 and Garth McQuade will do a presentation on Under Water Photography.

The set subject for the evening is "Water/Reflections".

This should be an easy one. The accent will be on water rather than merely scenic landscapes. The presenter will be looking at waterfalls, reflections, water drops, rain and underwater shots. Still life images with backlighting and manipulation adds to the possibilities of this exciting subject.

August 2013

The meeting is scheduled for 21 August 2013 and Ria Katze, APSSA will do a presentation on Children and Dogs.

The set subject for the evening is "Children and Dogs".

This is a challenge for you - the presentation is Children and Dogs - think out of the box with this one - the presenter looks forward you your challenges.

September 2013

The meeting is scheduled for 18 September 2013. This will be the club's Annual General Meeting as well. Evelyn will present some of her images from her trip to the Arctic.

The set subject for the evening is "Shadows".

Shadows add facet and significance to an image. They can highlight emotions, create surreal images, and be used in a variety of ways. Shadows create fascinating photos on their own, and they also are gorgeous when paired with their parent object.

The difference between the picture and its shadow makes an amazing photograph. It will be left to the judge to ascertain that the above guidelines are met and to accept or reject any photos on that basis.

October 2013

The meeting is scheduled for 16 October 2013 and Ken van Wyk, FPSSA, APSSA (Vers.) will do a presentation on Still Motion.

The set subject for the evening is "Motion".

This is an opportunity to set the shutter speed slower and start shooting anything that moves. Various shutter speeds have to be tried to get motion blur. This also presents the challenge of panning with the movement so that part of the image is in focus. No manipulation will be allowed, i.e. treat it as you would a nature or PJ image - both monochrome or colour images may be submitted.

November 2013

The meeting is scheduled for 20 November 2013. This will be the end of year function and prize giving. There will be no presentation during the evening and no formal club evening, only a celebration of the year's events.
