Four Nations Competition

The 4 Nations competition is a friendly event between the members of four great International Photographic Societies - PSNZ (New Zeeland), CAPA (Canada), APS (Australia) and PSSA.

Thank you to all who entered and congratulations to those whose images were selected for the PSSA team. Remember they do count as a salon acceptance. The PSSA entry can be viewed on the PSSA website.

The best image in the Nature Category was one of ours - congratulations to Dewald Tromp for "Afternoon Snack".

Melanie Loubser also did us proud with her image "African Skimmer" which received an Honorable Mention.

In the Open Category Dyan Ford's "Drip" was a worthy winner of an Honorable Mention. Well done to all three of you!

Join Joys_Av_FanatiX group!

As sometimes happens, I woke up at 2 am and could not get back to sleep a few nights ago because an idea kept buzzing around my head. The idea was to have an AV enthusiasts email support group, where any member is free to post a question, make a comment, alert us to interesting upcoming events, or even just to brag.

By about 6 am I was coming out of the delivery room with a new-born baby on my computer called "Joy's AV Fanatix". It goes like this:
  • Membership of the Yahoo group is by invitation only in order to limit spam.
  • If you want to joint, let me know, and I will send you an invitation to join.
  • You need to accept the invitation. Successful acceptance grants membership.
  • Once you are a member, you will receive any new posts that occur after you've joined.
  • Please try to keep the subject line as meaningful as possible.
  • All comments posted to the group are then automatically distributed to all members on the list, and any replies go to all as well.
  • Please let me know if you want to leave the group by sending an email to my private email address, not the group.
The group is functional right now, and is working well.

The idea of the group is to form a vibrant AV email community where we all share and care!

HAVE FUN AND LET ME KNOW IF YOU WANT TO JOIN!!

Second PAVC National Audio Visual Salon

Giant's Castle Game Reserve lies in the Central Berg region of the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park. Its name comes from the silhouette of the mountain escarpment that resembles the profile of a sleeping giant. Giant's Castle camp is situated on a grassy plateau among the deep valleys running down from the face of the High Drakensberg, offering glorious views for hikers and mountain climbers. Intensive Field, Class and Print Photojournalism on 11 August

This course includes an extremely sensitive early morning photo shoot on location on the outskirts of Pretoria at a shebeen and brothel where the prostitute mothers prepare for the day's work with their 'shadow children' lurking in the background.

I can only take 8 photographers on this field trip for security reasons, bigger groups make these people, whom I befriended over the years, antagonistic.

5h30-6h00: Coffee rusks and prepare for trip. Wear old clothes, no jewelery and make camera as inconspicuous as possible (short zoom and remove grip if possible), no camera bags or tripod, an extra wide angle lens, or short tele can be in your jacket pocket.

Leave at sunrise for venue, hand out clothes & old blankets and photograph for approximately two hours, staying any longer may agitate the people.

9h00-9h30: Breakfast back at school.

9h30-10h30: View, listen and discuss Henri Cartier-Bresson interview.

10h30-11h00: Coffee

11h00-13h30: Lecture on Photojournalism:

Photojournalism in theory; Celebrity photography, Conflict photography, Street photography, Travel photography and Sport photography

Photojournalism ethics and the Evolution of Photojournalism: Passive Bystander or Active Participant?

Photojournalism as a trade craft and Photojournalistic Technique

Photojournalism equipment

A look at the work of masters and the photo story

13h30-14h30: Lunch.

14h30-16h30: Evaluate process and prepare photos as a photo story of the morning event.

16h30-17h00: Have 4 A4 photos (photo story) and 1 A3 (best of morning) professionally printed by
Photoprint
